Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Case Studies

Case 1

51-year-old female with non-healing wounds folowing bilateral breast reconstruction with TRAM flap. Patient has a history of left breast cancer in 2008 that was treated with modified radical mastectomy followed by radiation and chemotherapy. She had a left latissimus dorsi myocutaneous flap that failed. In 10/10 she had a right mastectomy and bilateral reconstruction with TRAM flap. During the two weeks prior to presentation, she began having necrosis at the margins of the left breast flap which has required surgical debridement. Necrosis is within the prior irradiated zone. Patient received hyperbaric oxygen therapy, serial debridements, and wound VAC therapy with complete healing.

Case 2

36-year-old Caucasian female who presented for a large chronic non healing abdominal wound which reopened after surgery for a ventral hernia. Patient received hyperbaric oxygen therapy, antibiotics, serial debridements, wound VAC therapy, and weekly wound care.

Case 3

80-year-old Caucasian female who presented for a chronic non healing wound due to local trauma. She sustained a wound which required 26 stitches at an urgent care center. The urgent care center removed the stitches 10 days later. After the stitches were removed, the wound dehisced and became necrotic. Patient received hyperbaric oxygen therapy, serial debridements, weekly wound care and skin substitute therapy.
